“Google has passed a significant milestone in April, garnering half of the searches in the U.S.,” says Michael Lanz, vice president, search industry solutions, Nielsen//NetRatings. There is also opportunity for smaller providers to fulfill targeted search needs.”

Nielsen also released data demonstrating that consumers are increasingly using the Internet to connect to major retail stores, which illustrates the influence of search on online and offline purchasing. “Home Depot” and “Wal-Mart” were the number one and number two search terms in this category, respectively. “Home Depot” had nearly 2.5 million searches, and “Wal-Mart” had 2.3 millionsearches during April.
