Newspaper publisher Gannett Co. has purchased local search engine Planet Discover. Discover’s local search technology powers the search functions of several businesses in the local news and travel industries like SeeAmerica.org, Colorado.com, Minneapolis-St. Paul’s StarTribune.com and the North Carolina/South Carolina/Virginia local search site Triangle.com.

Gannett will use their newly acquired Planet Discover to power the local search on their own sites. Currently Gannett owns more than 90 newspapers around the country, including USA Today. They also have a substantial presence in the UK through their Newsquest subsidiary and own several US TV stations.

“With this new relationship, we will move more emphatically into deep, robust local search for our 100-plus Web sites,” said Gannett Digital president Jack Williams in a statement. “This fits well with our mission: to be the go-to provider of must-have local news and information across all media.”

Planet Discover’s technology combines local news, web site, business, job, product listing, and classified search results on a single page. Discover will maintain its relationships with its current clients as it integrates with Gannett, whose other forays into online advertising technology include the purchase of rich media advertising company PointRoll last summer.
