China Expands Wireless Services
China continues to expand its wireless technology with Research in Motion’s (RIM) announcement yesterday that China Mobile Communications Co. will offer BlackBerry service in China. RIM and China Mobile will initially offer the service to multinational companies with operations in China, but BlackBerry service will soon be available nationwide. The availability of BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will be announced at a later date.
“Millions of mobile professionals around the world have recognized the unique security, manageability, efficiency and reliability of the BlackBerry architecture,” said Jim Balsillie, Chairman and Co-CEO at RIM, in a press statement. “We are very excited to bring BlackBerry to China. The collaboration of China Mobile and RIM will extend the reach of BlackBerry to a large and important market.”
RIM’s announcement was followed by a statement today from the KongZhong Corporation, a leading provider of wireless value-added services(WVAS) and an operator of one of the leading wireless Internet portals in China, that it has established strategic WVAS and wireless Internet partnerships with He Xun and eNet. He Xun is one of the most popular Chinese financial portals and eNet is one of the most influential online IT product information providers in China. These two vertical portals will provide content through KongZhong’s wireless value added services and establish co-branded channels on KongZhong’s wireless Internet portal, Kong.net, to provide wireless users with content and information.
Back in the United States, Philadelphia’s City Council approved a plan yesterday to build a high-speed wireless Internet connection for the entire city. EarthLink will construct and operate the network under a 10-year contract.
