AKQA Designs Psychedelic MSN Site

Interactive agency AKQA has created a one-page site consisting of a single looped .GIF animation for its client MSN Messenger. Coined “The Way News Spreads,” the digital art object is meant to provide the Microsoft application with more youth appeal and personality.

According to reports, U.K. artist Will Sweeney created the animated Web page, which includes dozens of very small, interconnected drawings of things like flying sharks, knights playing Ping-Pong, walking video cameras, banana cars and Mexican wrestlers all set to a Filipino nursery rhyme as background music. The page’s sole interactive element, though, is a single link to download MSN Messenger.

“We didn’t want to picture Messenger as the main part of the story,” P.J. Pereira, AKQA executive creative director, said in a statement to ClickZ. “Messenger is just a way to talk to your friends, exchange ideas, share some thoughts. We wanted to explore, in a visual metaphor, how many ways you can [do that], and how that comes back to you.”

A banner campaign placed across the MSN network and on properties including GameSpot, Shockwave.com and Evite will support the site.
