Tracking the Longest Ad in the World

Inspired by Alex Tew’s pixel advertising site, Canadian entrepreneur Noah Fleming has launched an advertising-gimmick web page featuring an endlessly scrolling chain of paper dolls. An advertiser purchases paper dolls, or “chain men,” in blocks of 50 for $1 each. Each “chain man” appears randomly in the scrolling chain, in the hopes that a visitor never sees the same sequence of ads twice. Advertisers can design the ads themselves using a downloaded template, or have TheWorldsLongestAd.com do it for a fee. They claim to have 1050 advertisements so far.

“I’d like to see the ad reach at least five million chain men,” said Fleming in a statement. Fleming believes that 5 million ads will land him and his advertisers a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest ad. Once they reach 5 million, he says, they’ll try for their ultimate goal: to line up about 656,277,600 “chain-man” advertisements; enough to circle the globe.

Fleming has also set up an affiliate program to promote the web site. Affiliates get a 50% cut of every advertiser they refer to TheWorldsLongestAd.com. He has also said that he would keep the website online for at least ten years.

Reader Comments.

I’ll bet the next three comments in this thread are from members of his affiliate program (with links of course).

I posted a link to Alex Tew’s million dollar home page when he had 11,000 on there (heard about it from AdBumb). We had some traffic come in, but nothing to justify a $400 outlay. We had a 20X20 box, and we’re still getting around 70 visits a month. I’m guessing if we threw about $2000 at it we’d have gotten a lot more traffic and maybe it would have made sense.

On ad site that would make sense was if it were some kind of creative competition where people would go to show off their mad advertising skilz and people would rate them. Maybe use that to get props for the creative types.

If anyone does this and makes money off of it, throw me a bone :)
