Pixsy Turns on Visual Search Engine

The Pixsy Corporation, a company known for its visual search technology has launched version 2.0 of their web based image and video search engine, Pixsy.com. Pixsy.com searches image and video content available on the internet via RSS feeds. Their proprietary technology extracts images and thumbnails from videos, indexes them, and organizes them into searchable categories.

Nielsen//NetRatings called image search the fastest growing search category, and reported 91% annual growth. They cited readily available broadband and social networking systems.

By focusing on RSS feeds, Pixsy claims to deliver the most up-to-date video and image search results and emphasizes news and photos. Pixsy indexes RSS feeds from sources like Reuters, YouTube, C|Net, iVillage, and the BBC. While Pixsy creates a thumbnail image from an online video, and displays a relevant image, clicking on an image or video thumbnail takes a user directly to the original publisher’s web page.

Visitors to Pixsy.com can search images by keyword, category, or click one of the source logos on the left hand side. For example, clicking the New York Times logo brings up the most recent images and videos from the New York Times web site. Search results are displayed in a nice AJAX interface, with contextual Looksmart ads in a bar along the left-hand side of the page.
