Babel Fish Gets a Makeover

Yahoo! announced yesterday that it has incorporated Altavista’s translating tool Babel Fish across Yahoo’s properties. As always, the tool will allow users to translate text or Web pages across 38 language pairs, but Yahoo! has beefed up the tool with some new features.

Raymond Flournoy, Linguistic Product Manager for Yahoo!, writes on the company’s blog that these new features include, “Two more language pair choices: Simplified Chinese into Traditional Chinese, and Traditional Chinese into Simplified Chinese” and “Yahoo! Search Translator Beta, currently available in Germany and in France, allowing users to translate queries and search for web pages, images, and videos in multiple languages simultaneously.” The tool will also share better integration with Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Toolbar, and the Yahoo! network.

To celebrate the relaunch of Babel Fish, Flournoy suggests mixing a Babbling Fish cocktail. The recipe can be found on the company’s blog.
