Annapolis Awarded Free, Ad-Supported Wifi

On Saturday, April 29th, the city of Annapolis Maryland will launch their free wifi network—no strings attached. The service will be entirely free to both users and taxpayers. Unlike free municipal wifi systems launched by other cities, the Annapolis system is run by a private company, Annapolis Wireless Internet, and will be supported entirely by advertising and online sponsorships opportunities for local businesses. The advertising will appear on the Annapolis Wireless splash page whenever a user logs on to the network.

“Providing free WiFi service to Annapolis is an important step in furthering our goal of making Maryland an attractive destination to live, work and visit. This private sponsorship creates a community environment for Maryland citizens, tourists, and the technology sector where everyone wins,” said Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. in a statement.

The wifi hotspot uses wireless technology from communications tech company Nortel. Wifi service will be available initially in the Annapolis downtown area, but service will expand to other parts of the city this summer. Anyone with a wifi network card will be able to use the system, making it available to both residents and tourists. Annapolis currently welcomes about 5.6 million tourists per year.
