Warner Bros. Maps ’16 Blocks’ and Beyond with Google

Ever since Google released their mapping codes to the masses, we’ve seen the gamut of mash-ups. Everything from UFO sightings to housing classifieds as ADOTAS has previously noted are popping up faster than Starbucks in New York City. Following the recent HBO online campaign launch for the Sopranos using Google Maps, Hollywood is truly starting to take note of the increasing popularity of the tool. So much so that even more recently, Warner Bros. has launched a similar campaign for the new Bruce Willis vehicle 16 Blocks also utilizing Google Maps.

The Richard Donner film, which hits theaters today, follows the story of hungover NYPD cop Jack Mosley (Willis) and his quest to protect Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) — a petty criminal who plans to testify in front of a grand jury — during the 16 blocks between lockup and the courthouse. But as many of you got the gist from the movie’s Super Bowl ads, there are a few bumps…or assassins…along the way.

Warner Bros. who hasn’t had much luck getting the word out about this campaign just yet, tells ADOTAS, “Warner Bros. is trying something different to promote 16 Blocks, their new movie with Bruce Willis and Mos Def. Manipulating Google Maps, we’ve created a backend database and allow people to add their own locations to a Google Map of the US. It’s called “My 16 Blocks” and it allows users to share the favorite locations and hangouts in the neighborhood around where they live. If enough people do this, the results could be interesting.”

So far, even though the site is still fresh, there is a running list of visitors’ favorite places on the “My 16 Blocks” page. Users can either scope out existing places listed by other users or register to list their own. Once you register a central point where a 16 block circle will mark your favorite spots, you can then mark them with appropriate icons (coffee mug, martini glass, shopping cart, etc.) and write in your own description or review of the locale and why it warrants “favorite” status.

Another nifty feature is the mapping of the 16 Blocks where users can not only chart Bruce Willis and Mos Def’s path in the movie but also watch streaming video clips to coincide with their location and time.

Users can also visit the Warner Bros. 16 Blocks microsite for further information about the movie including credits and production notes and download free wallpaper, posters, videos, photos, view tickets and show times, enter contests and virally send it to their friends.
