VeriSign to Purchase m-Qube

VeriSign, the online communications company best known for their secure SSL certificate technology — which protects billions of voice and data transactions over the Internet — has announced that they will purchase mobile marketing company m-Qube for $250 million. mQube helps companies develop, deliver, and monetize mobile applications, media, and messaging services. m-Qube currently reaches more than 200 million North American wireless customers, and manages mobile storefronts and marketing campaigns for companies like CBS, Warner Music, and Sony Pictures.

“VeriSign is combining its world-class expertise, applications and infrastructure to make content convergence over any network and any device a reality. m-Qube will increase our leadership and expand our services in this emerging category,” said Verisign Communications Services EVP Vernon Irvin in a press statement.

VeriSign has been gradually expanding into the mobile arena, and the acquisition of m-Qube complements their recent purchases of 3united in February, a company that powers SMS messaging and mobile media across Eastern Europe and the US, as well as Kontiki, a company that delivers mobile p2p digital media for companies like AOL and Verizon. VeriSign expects to finalize the acquisition of m-Qube by the end of the 2nd quarter, 2006.
