The Interactive Job Market: Who’s Hiring, What They’re Looking for and How You Can Succeed

Stephen Jackson
President & CEO, Smashing Ideas Inc.

1) What do you look for in hiring an employee at your company, and what do you recommend that job applicants of any interactive media company do?

The short answer is talent, compassion and an unwavering desire to create immersive rich media experiences.

Being a small company with only 50 employees we have taken a great deal of time and effort to ensure all of the people that join Smashing Ideas work well in our culture. We have a very creative and open environment that supports ongoing communication throughout the studio. The work stands for itself in terms of quality but what also goes into the mix is the process in creating the end result and that starts with communication.

This is a great time for talented people wishing to enter or make a move within the interactive industry. We are seeing more opportunities in all aspects of digital media than ever before. The key is to ensure your work stands out. Know your audience, the type of work they do and the focus of the company you wish to work for.

2) What is the most difficult position you are having trouble filling and why?

We hire primarily three groups of people, Flash developers, Designers/Animators and Producers. Each can be difficult at any given moment however we have been extremely fortunate to have some very talented people come to us directly. However if I had to pick one it would be senior developers with a practical knowledge of developing games and other content in our space and on multiple devices.

3) Given that our medium has been built by a younger generation and at times by people from other parts of the world, does age or cultural background have any bearing on your hires? (this with the understanding that most companies are EOE)

No. I’m definitely the old guy of the group but age or background never come into play other than the persons ability to engage with everyone at the studio. We have a great mix of people with widely different backgrounds, life experiences and beliefs but we all share a common vision and fascination for our industry and Smashing Ideas.

4) What skill set do you find most applicants lack?

Domain Expertise: Our industry is relatively young and is in constant change with new tools, styles and capabilities. For us to continue succeeding we must always look ahead for new trends or tools that allow us to interact with our audience better.

5) What are you currently hiring for?

We’re always on the look out for great people. We are currently looking for Flash developers, junior and senior designers, producers and account managers both with interactive entertainment and ad agency experience.
