The Interactive Job Market: Who’s Hiring, What They’re Looking for and How You Can Succeed

Amanda Hass
VP Marketing, WhenU

1) What do you look for in hiring an employee at your company, and what do you recommend that job applicants of any interactive media company do?

We look for individuals with proven experience who have that entrepreneurial spirit. Detail oriented, requiring little guidance, strong analytical and technical abilities. Mostly, we hire people that others employees or people connected with the company already know personally or professionally. Interactive media job applicants should always try to get introductions through people they know.

2) What is the most difficult position you are having trouble filling
and why?

Proven sales managers — the market is very competitive — and Sr. Software developers. Some of our language used is not well known but is required eg. ATL and COM experience

3) Given that our medium has been built by a younger generation and at
times by people from other parts of the world, does age or cultural background have any bearing on your hires? (this with the understanding that most companies are EOE)

We’ve hired a lot of people in the last year, and our team is extremely diverse culturally, which is great since we do a lot of business internationally. But what we really care about is what you can do and how well you work in the group, not where you come from or how old you are

4) What skill set do you find most applicants lack?

Depends on the area. In technology, many people say they know more than they actually do so solid technical skills are lacking. Many applicants also seem to lack the drive and passion for success so many people want success but they want it now rather than working for it. Interactive media is a very me-focused industry and the team spirit is sometimes missing

5) What are you currently hiring for?

Ad Sales, Software Developers, Business Development, Advertising Operations
