The Interactive Job Market: Who’s Hiring, What They’re Looking for and How You Can Succeed

Shawn Broxson

FreePay B2B / International Expansion, Gratis Internet, Inc

1. What do you look for in hiring an employee at your company, and what do you recommend that job applicants of any interactive media company do?

We are a growing company so we look primarily for people that are do’ers. We need people that can take tasks and run with them. We look for intelligence with charisma. But with all that said — they have to be qualified since what we do require some degree of technical aptitude for all of our jobs. .

2. What is the most difficult position you are having trouble filling and why?

Our most difficult positions to find our programmers that fit a commercial environment. In DC we have a lot of folks used to the government world — online advertising is a completely different pace and we need people that can keep up.

3. Given that our medium has been built by a younger generation and at times by people from other parts of the world, does age or cultural background have any bearing on your hires? (this with the understanding that most companies are EOE)

Age and cultural background has very little to do with it though we find that our staff is a little younger because of the hiring market and our executive leadership is a little younger (our co-founders are both 29).

4. What skill set do you find most applicants lack?

I can’t speak for the company as a whole but my personal experience recently is people lack the passion and fire about their jobs. But maybe I am a little crazy on this one. I pour my heart and soul into what I do and like to work with people that do as well. I want people that care.

5. What are you currently hiring for?

We are just finishing a round of hiring some mid-sr. level leadership. We are always looking for account managers, ASP programmers and online advertising specialists.
