Between now and June, online magazine and web portal Slate.com is running its first “net novel,” an online trend it hopes to cultivate. Walter Kirn’s “The Unbinding” is a serialized novel originally conceived to take full advantage of the capabilities of the Internet. Twice a week during the four-month period, Kirn updates the novel on Slate.com in real time, relying heavily on fictitious “found files” throughout the Internet—links to sites like MyStory.com and ExpressWeek.com, which his characters might find themselves interacting with in their daily lives.

Slate.com, which has pronounced a desire to earn recognition for innovative online ad campaigns, is planning to bring an unnamed exclusive sponsor aboard to support the novel. Slate recently caught attention in online marketing with its Visa “flip” campaign, which presented the entire site as a mirror image of itself and required users to mouse-over the banner to return it to normal.

“The Unbinding” is Kirn’s fifth novel, and follows in the dark comedy vein of his previous works, such as “Thumbsucker” and “Mission to America.” He is a contributing editor to Time and GQ, and a regular critic in the New York Times’ Book Review.
