Lycos Targets Competitive Gamers

Lycos recently introduced a Lycos Games section to their site in an attempt to court the lucrative market of young male competitive gamers and the advertisers eager to reach them. The move expands upon the game site Lycos already operates, Gamesville.com, which caters to more casual game enthusiasts.

Lycos plans to run a number of “targeted inventory” ads specifically aimed at a gaming audience. A portion of the site’s ad inventory will be sold by 24/7 Real Media, while a portion will be sold in-house. “We have a constant pool of advertisers and a relatively aggressive sales force already on Gamesville,” said Lycos COO Brian Kalinowski in a press statement.

Lycos Games will offer free downloadable games like Game Factory’s Albatross 18, free online games like Bejeweled and Solitaire, and will also serve as a distribution channel for downloading full retail games such as Ubi Soft’s Prince of Persia. The site will also include some original editorial content like news, reviews and cheats as well as community features like avatars, leader boards, and private gaming leagues.
