Yesterday, Lycos announced the launch of its ad-supported Lycos Phone, a VoIP softphone application that combines a multi-featured entertainment package with several new voice-calling capabilities. An alternative to popular VoIP services from Skype and Yahoo, Lycos Phone will be powered by Globe7, whose global network already possesses the ability to power 20 million simultaneous sessions for voice, video, IM and real-time video streaming.

Lycos Phone, available at www.lycos.globe7.com, features free voice and video calls from PC to PC, free incoming calls from land and mobile lines, and 100 free minutes of PC to land and PC to mobile calling for new users. Membership will include a U.S. phone number, as well as fax, voicemail, and email services.

Lycos is touting the application’s many multimedia functions, which they claim take the VoIP model to a new level. Users will have support for music, including an mp3 player, as well as video on-demand, with access to over 300 movie trailers, business news, and sports being offered.

Lycos Phone is currently only supported by Windows 2000 and XP, but will soon be available on Linux, Mac OS, and Pocket PC.
