Google Launches News in Hebrew; Pulls Back GDrive Rumors
In its latest move to be an all-inclusive news search engine, Google yesterday announced on its blog that it has expanded Google News to Israel. Following its recent opening of an office in Israel, the company blog says Google News Israel, like its other Google News properties, will “aggregate articles across Hebrew-language newspapers and presents them side by side so you can read what all of them are saying in one view.”
This marks the first time the company must accommodate for a language that reads right to left. Google explains this move, saying, “It’s been fun and challenging to create this edition, having to accommodate text that reads right to left, and adjusting our algorithms to work with a whole new set of papers. It’s also a pleasure to be launching Google News for a whole new audience, and we look forward to bringing it to even more people around the world.”
Google has also recently been rumored to be preparing to offer infinite storage for online users. The product, rumored to be named GDrive, was discovered by a blogger last week after a corporate slide presentation leaked on the web. “With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc),” the notes in the original Google presentation stated.
The company has since taken down the speaker portion of those notes replacing the PowerPoint presentation with a 94-page Adobe Acrobat file without the GDrive information. “We deleted the slide notes because they were not intended for publication,” Google spokeswoman Lynn Fox told Reuters. “We are constantly working on new ways to enhance our products and services for users, but have nothing to announce at this time.”
