CipherTrust Reels in Anti-Phishing Site
Email and messaging security company CipherTrust unveiled their new anti-phishing website at the MIT Spam Conference 2006. PhishRegistry.org is a free online resource that lets businesses register their official websites and alert them to fraud. CipherTrust has designed the system to help businesses alert their customers to any known phishing sites.
“Online fraud is a race between the bad guys, who rush to post false sites to snare unsuspecting users, and the good guys – legitimate businesses protecting their brand and their customers,” said CipherTrust CTO Dr. Paul Judge in a statement. PhishRegistry.org monitors a business’s website and sends the company a notification if it detects another site trying to duplicate it and trick customers into thinking it’s legitimate. “Think of PhishRegistry.org as a ‘neighborhood watch’ that dramatically speeds the pace at which organizations are notified of phishing attempts—a significant advantage in the race to ensure trust in the Internet and in online communications,” said Judge.
Phishers rely on fraudulent websites designed to look as if they are published by a legitimate company. They then use these sites to steal and personal information a person might submit, such as passwords, social security, PIN, and credit card numbers. PhishRegistry.org uses CipherTrust’s Phisherprinting technology to determine whether a site is attempting to pass itself off as belonging to another company.
