China Gains Online World Cup Coverage

ADOTAS has learned that Chinese web portal Sohu.com has inked a deal a subsidiary of Shanghai Media Group (SMG), SMGBB.cn, to provide FIFA World Cup 2006 online video content in China. SMGBB.cn has received the first ever authorization from FIFA to provide video content of the 2006 World Cup in mainland China over broadband, and SMGBB.cn has chosen Sohu.com as its exclusive portal partner.

The partnership will establish a dedicated World Cup website that will deliver real-time video highlights and tournament photos to Chinese football fans. The site will also feature exclusive World Cup content such as behind the scenes footage, clips, and highlights, all available in rich media formats.

SMG’s main business includes television broadcasting and related media entertainment services including sports, showbiz, performance arts, science and technology, and finance. The parties could not be contacted for comment.
