AOL Media Networks

What they do: AOL Media Networks is a subsidiary of AOL, one of the largest providers of premium online content and formerly the world’s largest provider of surplus floppy disks. AOL Media Networks is a worldwide strategic marketing solution that capitalizes on AOL’s vast subscriber base and library of online networks. The great umbrella of Media Networks covers industries like ecommerce, entertainment, gaming, social networking, email, instant messaging, news, technology, finance, education, sports, and travel.

Why you should buy: According to comScore MediaMetrix, the AOL Media Network connects with 112 million people per month. AOL is large enough to target a mass audience across several demographics through each of its 48 specific brands, which include AIM and Winamp. AOL ranks its URLs according to 46 targeted demographic segments, composed of different combinations of age group, gender, and ethnicity.

Format/How much:
AOL offers standard UAP and IAB banner ad sizes like 160×600, 180×150, 120×60, and 468×60, along with several custom sizes like 175×45 and 640×480. Pop-ups and pop-unders are available, as are 125×125 banners on AOL’s welcome screen. AOL only accepts animated GIF’s for AOL welcome screen and email in-box ads. Specially formatted ads are also available to be served through AOL’s other brands like AOL Instant Messager (AIM), TIME, and Mapquest. AOL also accepts both standard image and rich media ads, and video streaming ads are also available to be shown before and after streaming video content. The requirements of each are dependent upon the content area in which they appear.

Average CPM across the board is about $5-10.00. Ads that are more targeted can go as high as $40.00 CPM. AOL has a minimum ad-spend of $15,000.00.
