Yahoo today announced that it will be expanding its research operations into Europe and Latin America with the opening of new facilities in Spain and Chile.

Yahoo Research’s Barcelona office will be the first in Europe, and like the Yahoo Research’s Santiago office, it will have ties with local universities to tap into new and innovative ideas from students and faculty. While the Barcelona office will work alongside the Center for Innovation Barcelona Media and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) among other local universities, the Santiago office will be run in conjunction with the Center for Web Research (CWR), which is hosted by the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Chile.

Dr. Ricardo Baeza-Yates, a web retrieval and mining expert, will be based in Barcelona and will lead both centers in their focus on topics related to web search and information extraction.

Prabhakar Raghavan, head of Yahoo Research, expresses his enthusiasm, saying, “With the recent hires of search industry experts including Andrei Broder and now Ricardo, Yahoo continues to expand its growing bench of world-class technical talent and scientists. This is an exciting opportunity for Yahoo Research to draw on the talent and knowledge across Europe and Latin America and strengthen our collaboration with universities that lead in research and development.”
