Want Pictures? Just Ask Jeeves

This week, Ask Jeeves, or Ask.com as its known nowadays, released its in-house developed image search platform. Just like Google, MSN, and Yahoo search, an image search on Ask (who calls it “Picture” search), brings up images from across the web. Unlike the rest of them, however, Ask also displays a sidebar containing related names and other categories. Contextual sponsored (non-image) links are also displayed prominently on the bottom.

Image search is the second most popular form of Internet search on Ask Jeeves, and, according to James Jeude, Ask’s Senior Product Manager on the Ask Blog, 16% of all Ask searches come from their image search. The Picture search now uses Ask’s search indexing, clustering, and image recognition technology to provide links to other related searches. The links on the sidebar are called “Zoom” related searches that users can click on to narrow down their search, retrieving more relevant results.

Ask previously licensed its image search results from Picsearch, a Swedish image search company that has also provided search results for MSN and Lycos. Some Picsearch results still appear in Ask’s picture search, but Ask is relying primarily on its new technology.
