Internet Ad Spend for EU-5 on the Rise

A new report from eMarketer today found that online advertising for the five largest nations in Western Europe—including Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the UK (EU-5)—grew 38% over 2004′s spending to €1.9 billion (approx. $2.2 billion) last year. And though Internet ad spending in all 17 Western Europe nations in 2005 increased to €2.7 billion (approx. $3.2 billion), Europe still falls short of U.S. total ad spending which eMarketer estimated at $12.9 billion in 2005.

“While the European Internet ad market may not be the same as in the US, it’s much like an echo—a similar sound but a few beats behind,” said eMarketer senior analyst David Hallerman, author of Europe Online Advertising: Spending Trends & The Target Audience. “That means spending still has far to go before catching up with the more avid audience, and traditional advertisers are still putting more money in old-time media (notably print) where audiences spend less and less time.”

The report also notes that the EU-5 have 131.5 million Internet users, which eMarketer projects will rise to 174.6 by 2008.
