Google Raises its Toolbar
On Sunday night, Google released a new version of its toolbar and added one designed for the enterprise. InternetNews reports that Google broadens its functionality beyond Google Search with Toolbar 4.0, which now includes Web-based bookmarks, site-specific search and most significantly, custom buttons.
“Custom buttons go to the heart of the personalization we’ve done,” Sundar Pichai, group product manager of client software at Google, told InternetNews. “We wanted a scalable way by which each user could customize the toolbar in meaningful way.”
In essence, the custom buttons allow users to search a favorite site from the toolbar. With this tool, you could type your query into the toolbar search box, then click the button to search your favorite site, and results appear in a drop-down menu within the button.
End users can also select buttons from a button gallery, which Google expects will launch with 50 buttons. Users also can right-click on a search box on any site to add it as a custom button. On a Web page or blog, publishers can create custom buttons that say, “Click this to add our site to your custom toolbar.” Those who click will be referred to Google, where they’ll be offered the opportunity to download the toolbar if they haven’t already.
The second new addition is bookmarking. Though it’s standard for browsers to let you bookmark a page, Google’s Toolbar 4.0 slightly reworks the format. By clicking on a yellow star on the toolbar, users can save bookmarks to Google’s servers, where they’ll be accessible from an Internet connection, as long as the person has signed in to a Google account.
And as for the search box itself, the most notable new options is: As a query is typed, the toolbar corrects spelling, offers Google Suggestions and shows relevant bookmarks.
In addition, Google also released its first toolbar for the enterprise, which has the same functionality as Google Toolbar 4.0, but adds management tools for IT administrators. Google Toolbar Enterprise Edition complies with Microsoft Group Policy and enables admins to centrally manage access to features and deployment of the toolbar itself.
Google plans to make the latest toolbar available in 16 languages by the end of Q1. Version 4.0 is currently in beta, but the company expects that this status would be removed in the next two to three months.
